Founded as an Iberian settlement in pre-Roman times, Salamanca fell to Hannibal in 217 BC. Pre-eminent among its artists and master craftsmen of later years were the Churriguera brothers whose work can be seen in many of Salamanca’s golden stone buildings, notably in the Plaza Mayor, but also in the popular House of Shells or some of its Renaissance palaces, such as the 16th-century palaces of Salina, Orellana, and Anaya.
This is the City where Spanish Language was born. During the 15th century, the council of Salamanca ordered the edition of the first Castilian Grammar, which would later become a quintessential tool for its global expansion.
The golden city. Salamanca must be seen by day and by night, but if you can´t make it both, do your best to enjoy its magical sunset, as this is the time when the sun gives a golden hue to the stone used to construct it centuries ago.
