Porto

Porto is the head of the wine country in Portugal. The enormous beauty and bio-diversity of the area has transformed it in one of the most attractive destinations in Western Europe. At the same time, the old city is one of the most charming in Portugal, which reinforces the romantic and evocative aspects of the destination. Today, any tour through the Iberian Peninsula finds in Porto its most perfect conclusion…

Douro Valley

The Douro Valley is with other wine areas of the Iberian Peninsula, one of the oldest demarcated wine regions worldwide. In Spain the region called Ribera del Duero (Spanish Douro Valley) presents outstanding red wines among the most awarded in the International wine Market. Then the river enters in Portugal and crosses a region of mountains. The river caved the deep valley out of the land and then the human force transformed these mountains into soils and walls and planted the first vines Always providing the most stunning views, green in summer, flame-colored in autumn. With the oldest knowledge transmitted from generation to generation, the inclined terraces expose the vineyards to the rays of the sun. A unique landscape culture made entirely by the land itself and man’s labor.

Cascais & Sintra

The romantic coast of Lisbon offers beautiful ocean views but also a permanent contrast between sea and mountains. The village of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage, is renown for its peculiar charm full of colour and its fabulous 19th century palace. Cascais offers the typical vision of a Southern Europe fishermen’s village just over the ocean.

Obidos, Nazaré and Aveiro

The Western Portugal region is the place to experience Portuguese popular gastronomy, based on natural products and old recipes. Nazaré is a lovely fishermen village along a gorgeous coast with large sandy beaches. Aveiro is also named the Portuguese Venice for its lovely canals. To conclude with our exploration of this area we get to Obidos, considered as one of the most charming villages of Portugal, with its white narrow streets and its beautiful castle on the top of the hill.

Ponte de Lima

Ponte de Lima is one of the most typical villages of Northern Portugal, and the head of the Green Wine region. The atmosphere of the little city is brilliant, and people are especially kind as the tourist industry has not invaded this hidden part of the country yet.

Belmonte, Castelo de Vide

These two villages are situated in Eastern Portugal, in an isolated region, not far from the Spanish border. This area of Montains ( Tras os Montes, Serra da Estrela) is still considered very pure, preserving the essence of the Iberian Peninsula. It is also one of the regions inhabited by the last Jewish communities of the Peninsula, and numerous rests of that period can still be observed. Both villages are very beautiful and are considered as historical gems with splendid surroundings.

Evora

The capital of Alentejo is also one of the most attractive historical cities of Portugal, with many architectural highlights and a typical southern atmosphere.
Evora was historically a major trading and religious center. But the city should not be mistaken with a sleepy old relic, being one of the most dynamic urban centers of the country, young and vibrant, mercy to an important university, one of the oldest of Western Europe.

Well, we’re back home in one piece and reflecting on a fantastic trip! I can’t remember the last time I went on holiday and learned so much. Carlos was an excellent guide – intelligent, communicative, engaging and an amazing partner during the whole trip. The right choice for us. We all agree that you managed a great balance of traditional/classical and contemporary in the itinerary. The 4x4 tour crossing the Uncharted territory was a great experience. For us, being restaurant owners ourserlves, both the food and restaurant selections were perfect.

My son and I spent 15 days in southern Spain and Portugal last month, with a private guide each day, arranged by Terra. Our guide Trini was fantastic. She was extremely knowledgeable, fun, easy going, and flexible. Pomegranate did a superb job arranging all the lodging, logistics, etc and helped us develop an itinerary that started in Madrid, took us up the mediterranean coast, over to Granada and then straight to the Algarve beaches and Lisbon. Absolutely fantastic! I would highly recommend using Terra Traditions, and we will again for a future trip!

Just finished a Spain and Portugal private escorted tour.. The quality of hotels and restaurants were of an excellent standard. Our guides, Joan, Carlos and Trini, and our chauffeur Guillermo were so professional, they made the trip so interesting and unique. Nothing was too much trouble. I would love to come back in a few years time and will be using Terra Traditions. Well done.

Good Morning Jean. Richard proclaimed this our best holiday ever, and I completely agree!! Some of the highlights (in my humble opinion) … The conversation with your friend, Paco … The art tour with Joan, who is completely in touch with the contemporary art scene in Catalonia … The jeep tour across the uncharted lands in Granada… The Hospes hotel — well, both the hotel and the outstanding location. We will probably return next year, and will contact you for Our Return!! Thank you for your guidance and for providing us with such an amazing memory.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for organising my tour across the north of the Iberian peninsula. I saw so many beautiful things. The luxury hotels booked generally exceeded my expectations. Always comfortable and clean. The photographic opportunities were just amazing. Mostly a memorable trip and highly recommended.

Well, our trip has drawn to a close and it was a rousing success, in large part due to your efforts and care for details; and we can’t thank you and your guides enough. Everyone had a wonderful time. We loved the Wellness retreat, and the wineries were all excellent. I’ll be happy to recommend Terra traditions to other friends and family thinking of visiting the iberian country!!!

Not cheap but worth every penny!… Thanks again for making our experience fun, charming but discrete, and insightful.

Good time to go?

Portugal, mainly all across the coast, is mild most year round. Even during cloudy winters when the sun appears temperature does rise.
Our favorite times of year to visit Portugal are during spring and early autumn ( February, March, April, and May ) – especially for the blooming hillsides and the almond groves from the countryside – and early autumn ( October ), when the weather is still warm enough, and crowds have vanished away.
