Medieval & Romanesque Art Collection

The National Museum of Catalonia is the most important museum of Barcelona, with collections from medieval art to the latest vanguard. It is situated over the Monjuic Hill, with sumptuous surroundings and exceptional views over the city. The tour focuses on the impressive medieval collection, which is divided into two main areas, the Romanesque Art section and the Gothic (this it the best period during which Catalonian artists were leading over the Spanish. The collection of Romanesque frescoes from the 11th until 13th century is specially outstanding, as it is indeed considered the best Romanesque assembly in the world. These vibrant and raw mural paintings were collected from it’s original churches for their preservation and now they are creatively showcased in realistic reconstructions of their original settings.

Some of the most popular classical featured artists are Velázquez, El Greco, Goya, Rubens or Velazquez.

The Contemporary Catalan art collection is also top notch, with fascinating modernista works by Gaudí, and large paintings by Joan Miro.
